As you all know by now Barack Obama is now the President-Elect for the United States. This event has been warmly welcomed by many people, but then it’s also convinced many people that moving to Canada is a better option. Personally I am quite excited about Obama taking the reins of this country. Throughout the election there has been these really cool emails and text messages going around proclaiming that Barack Obama is the Anti-Christ. They pull a lot of examples from the bible, and compare them to a lot of qualities that Obama does in fact have, but they also ignore the stuff that doesn’t help their argument. I learned on November 4, that I have some extended family that honestly believes this crud. However, I see things in a couple different ways. For starters, I don’t think even the Anti-Christ is strong enough to escape American culture. He would be so completely subdued by the fame that America would bring him, that ruling over the world and causing pain and suffering gets set to the back burner. Secondly, if Obama is the Anti-Christ and God wanted him to not take power, than he damn well should not have picked McCain and Palin to run against him. I mean really, who expected McCain to win with his lip-sticked bull-dog. With her constant golly-gee oh my, and the seeing of Russia from Alaska. I have yet to understand how seeing Russia from the shores of Alaska makes her more qualified with foreign policy. I suppose though, that this no longer matters since they’re out. Lastly, I don’t think the Anti-Christ would really submit himself to the democratic system. From what I knew about the guy I was pretty sure they would basically just take the power they want, and do not need the citizens of the United States to grant him that.
Moving on, we’ve been living under this Republican style of government for almost a decade, and I’d like to see what kind of changes can be made, as cliché as that has become. I realize the Oval Office is not installed with a fix-the-economy-and-foreign-policy clapper, which would allow Obama to clap his hand and everything would be better. I understand that the experts in Silicon Valley decided this technology was too advanced for Bush, because he claps when he gets excited. Imagine the trouble that would cause. One moment Iran hates us, the next minute we’re slamming tequila shots in Tijuana with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the DOW is up, and the DOW is down. Maybe Bush did get the economy clapper? However, with Obama taking seat in the West Wing there will be some changes, especially since the Democrats now hold a slight majority in both houses of congress. I don’t know what these changes will be, but here’s a quick list of what I’d like to see happen. Keep in mind however that some of the things I’ve listed will not be something that the executive branch of government can do. I’ll also admit that I don’t know how some of this can be done, but it is okay to ask. Right?
- A US Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of marriage defining amendments.
- Economic plans that work.
- Growth on the value of the USD.
- Sarah Palin deported back to Alaska.
…and a more recent development,
- McCain supporters to stop haling Armageddon.
As unlikely as it is a ruling on these amendments from the US Supreme Court would be nice. I understand that the stance that most federal officials have taken on the same-sex marriage argument is that they believe the states should handle their own idea of marriage. This is not a bad thing; however there will be a problem when some states begin denying or nullifying people’s marriages because they were married in another state. I can’t explicitly come up with a reason for a gay or lesbian couple to move to Texas, but hey maybe they like the weather. The court eventually ruled on mixed-race marriages, and they’ll eventually rule on same-sex marriages.
The second and third points fall in together. I do not know how to appropriately make either of them better. I am not an economist by any means. I took Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics two years ago, and don’t know how they apply to our situation anymore anyway. I do know however that stimulus packs did not work. They failed because a lot of more people than expected put it away for savings. I know one couple that did spend their stimulus pack, but they boosted the German economy not the US. I’ve heard the sounds of a second stimulus package heading out maybe. I don’t know who wants this to happen, but it doesn’t work. Also, what’s with the mega-bucks bailout? That didn’t seem to make any different anywhere except in padding the pockets of some CEOs that were “let go”. I watched the DOW on the morning that the government invested several billion dollars into banks in the nation. Logically prices should have gone up, but instead they fell some more! I beg of you all, everyone that we’ve given power in this country; please do a better job with the economy.
I’m really sick of Sarah Palin. I haven’t really been able to listen to her speeches because of this “every man” façade she’s had to put on. Since Tuesday night I’ve seen her on television just as much as before. The sad thing is that before she was picked up for VP I had never heard of her. Period the end. I still haven’t learned why McCain chose the governor of Alaska as his running mate. If you know why please explain it all to me.
Now that Obama is President-Elect all hell has broken loose. Not so much in a literal sense, but it’s all across the blogosphere and Facebook. My favorite new Facebook groups are “Move to Canada ‘08″ and “The Official Petition for Texas to Secede from the Union”. The first group is completely ridiculous. It was started by a student from Texas State University: San Marcos. These people propose that now that Obama is in charge the United States is a socialist nation, and everything is going to Hell in a hand-basket. I don’t mind if this group of loons collectively leaves us, but I think they should know that Canada is not the best option for their conservative ways. Canada has been and probably always will be much more socialist than the US. They at least understand that a national medical plan is a good thing! Plus, Canada seems to be overjoyed by the fact that we elected Obama over McCain. That should be hint enough for them, but apparently not. Canada’s easy going ways is the reason draft-dodgers went there.
The second group is much more interesting and almost appears more put together. It was started by a gentleman from Texas A&M: The Mother Ship. He started his group with a vengeance and offers answers to many questions about the legality of secession, and how he thinks the founding fathers would have handled this situation. Although he leaves out some important Civil War and Reconstruction policies, which were created to keep the Union a whole He claims that the founding fathers wanted little federal government and more state power. That’s true, and fine and dandy to tell people, but that was the ideal behind the Articles of Confederation. As we all know those didn’t exactly work out. With the US Constitution they meant for the states to all be part of a larger system so that everyone could live in equal happiness. He continues to claim that Texas has the right to secede because of the founding fathers bit, but doesn’t account for the fact that states aren’t supposed to secede from the Union anytime something doesn’t go their way. We didn’t secede the last time a Democrat won, we won’t this time either. Mostly because our Texas politicians have the foresight to understand that this is a bad idea. Mr. Aggie also offers that we need to return Texas back to its original proud and strong nation state. While Texas may have been proud, and home of many strong men in the decade that it was its own nation, it definitely was not strong in the grand scheme of things. One fine example of such failing is that Texas didn’t survive as a country for more than 10 years, we willing joined the Union because we were floundering. Point two, I know things are different now, but then the Texas economy went to crap whenever we tried to walk on our own. I’m pretty sure that Texas red-backs were not worth the paper they were printed on by the end of our run. It was a nice try though!
In closing I’d like to not how impressed I am with McCain and his “farewell” speech. I am excited to see that he seems to have the integrity to stand behind his newly elected president and not fight for a re-count and check for hanging chads and all that great stuff that we saw through George and Jeb. His speech was well written and well presented. While I’m excited to see the Republicans leave the West Wing, it’s good to know that McCain doesn’t have hard feelings.
Has anyone checked the Hope Diamond lately?
